This application was built entirely on top of MS Excel. The client asked us to improve the visual design using seven screens as templates and to improve the readability of the product's reports. We created several possible visual designs and then used the client's preferred design on each of the 7 key screens. We then applied the visual design to the report templates.

BEFORE (Thumbnail above)
Excessive shading, abbreviation and emphasis in the wrong places made this user experience confusing and painful to work in for long periods of time.
AFTER
This user experience is entirely created in an Excel spreadsheet, using images only for the ends of the rounded buttons. As a result, it loads quickly and is compatible with all of the versions of Excel used by their customers.

CONCEPT #1
A variation that uses no images at all, but it only worked in Excel 2000 (A significant number of this company's users were still running Excel 97).

CONCEPT #2
Another variation, shown in Excel 97, and designed to be less tiring on the eyes. It makes you wonder why user interfaces didn't look better in 1997...

CONCEPT #3
Another user experience variation that used less heavy-handed treatment for the column shading.
