We were brought in early in this web-based product to produce a brand new design from scratch in 1999. We were responsible for the interaction and visual design of the entire product, an internet based calendar, from top to bottom. We started with a vision of how the calendar as a whole might look (click to see in full size).

Concept: How Calendar Might Look (click to enlarge)
Our initial idea was the break the traditional month boundary and work, instead, week by week with up to 6 weeks showing simultaneously. Appointments and events that span multiple days are always a little tricky. In addition to the method shown above, we developed 3 other ways of showing spanning appointments.

Concept: How Day Spanning Might Look
Three ideas for the daily calendar. Color coding was being used to identify different categories of appointments - personal, business, etc.

Concept: Overlapping Appointments on Day Calendar
All of these initial illustrations became jumping off points for discussion about design, product features, and implementation. They were a useful tool to every member of the team. With an initial design in mind for the calendar, we began to put the pieces of functionality together into an entire package.

And as we worked, the main window continued to change. We focused in on the design for the weekly calendar, employing a new way of showing conflicts.

Here is another piece of the functionality we worked on - a Calendar navigation system that would allow the user to see an overview of calendars and jump to just the right date when he needed to.
