We were asked to write a full user interface specification for this Microsoft Management Console (MMC) based application. We began work with the client months before engineering work started and met with everyone on the team regularly over a 6 month period. The final user interface specification detailed every aspect of the product's design and interaction and was 72 pages long. Portions of this specificaiton are available for private viewing.
The specification used a "sketch" style to show all the elements of a window. Since the interface was to be built using MMC, the user interface appearance would be largely determined by MMC. We decided that these sketches were much faster to build and populate with sample data versus using a GUI builder.
