In 2002, we were invited to work with the engineering team on this project to help them to create a beautiful, useful design. The project had a limited budget, so we were called in to develop ideas for critical problems and to supply the visual design work for the product. One of the visual design projects we tackled was the design of dialog boxes for the application, which was web-based. Here is the original design:

Here were some of the ideas we proposed:

Another area we worked on was the design of the Navigation bar at the top of the window. This is a key element of the interface, through which the user can drill up or down through the database hierarchy. We wanted something clean, easy to understand, and that made better use of the horizontal space on the screen.

We also worked with the team on the interaction design and visual design of the product's main windows.

Before: Main Window (click to enlarge)
One problem we noticed right away was poor use of vertical space; we wanted to fix that. We also noticed that the two tables often competed for the user's attention and it wasn't always clear which table the user should be working with. They were, basically, too similar.

In the redesign, everything on the page was labeled. The top table was made to look clearly different from the bottom one, and tied in to the database hierarchy navigation at the top, which it is more related to. Icons were added to the tables to tie in with the hierarchy navigation at the top and to strengthen the visual metaphors being used. We also made some subtle changes in color to bring emphasis to the data, rather than the table headers.
