This image based prototype for data analysts needed a facelift. The team asked us to evaluate the visual design and make recommendations that would improve appearance and usability. We produced 3 different new styles for the visual design. They then asked us to produce all 10 screens, all the data charts, and an animation for their demo. The total cost of this project was $10,100.
The product would allow retailers to conduct surveys of their customers, collect data and then project buying patterns.

The main window had four basic types of customer research that could be performed, plus information about trends for the company in general. The Gap was used as a sample company in this demonstration.
Obviously the visual design was crude and that is easy to fix. Harder to tackle was how confusing the interface was and the fact that it didn't guide the user through his work.

We proposed a series of visual redesigns. The window above is one of several. We also worked on some terminology changes ("New Product" became "Add New Product", for example). However, the product team was unable to make changes any more sweeping than that for this window.

Once data was collected, results were displayed on a graph over time.

Here we were able to convince the team to explore some conceptual changes. Rather than the large buttons on the bottom that vaguely say: Correlate, Predict, etc., we proposed a series of task-based questions that the user could ask: "How does this graph relate to other factors?" or "What is the likely future for this graph?"

We also made teh graph more readable. We added a legend, which was neglected in the original design and labeled many of the elements on the page. The new visual design also made it clear which elements were controls, such as "Winter 2000", and which were labels, such as "Customer Satisfaction and Sales".

We made similar changes to the scatter plot window and cleaned up the presentation of data to be more appealing.
